It is merely with the become this actually starts to break apart, although smack-right up finale rescues they throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can smartly dialogued, it will have no great issue for the way of life down their very unsightly term.” [ 8 ]

Richard Brody regarding the The new Yorker indexed “Which terse and you will tight flick noir was according to the fresh new intimate and you can professional conflicts of one’s name character, the newest violent genius (played by Knob Powell) behind a chic illegal gambling enterprise. Brand new film’s copywriter and manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, getting mortal limits, between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) worked in the gambling enterprise and you may old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of like and you will threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photographs (including their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a low profile classic of category.” [ ten ]

As the area follows a common pattern, this new characterizations is actually fresh in addition to performances good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you can relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney touch. Uncommon digital camera angles arrive on occasion to help you escalate desire and you can briefly arrest the eye. It is mostly a point of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces fashionably if you’re an enormous shed off stars and you will performers promote him classic assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable absolutely nothing woman who brings out the fresh new finest in your and you will Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen who gets him to the jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy because the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does another ready concert tour given that a tired cops inspector whom fundamentally closes the fact. Many taking and you will smoking is completed from the the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
